Essequibo outfalls being dredged

-in anticipation of La Nina
THE Ministry of Agriculture’s National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) has embarked on a major dredging exercise in Region Two as part of preparations for the anticipated La Nina. The dredging using NDIA’s excavators and pontoon will save the government in excess of $105M.

Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud, accompanied by Region Two Vice Chairman Vishnu Samaroo, recently inspected works being undertaken at the Perth outfall as the Ministry of Agriculture and other regional administrations commence necessary works in anticipation of the La Nina weather conditions forecast.

The equipment, which has been working for the last three weeks, has already dredged the Anna Regina, Lima and Windsor Castle outfalls and is at present working at Perth. Following completion of this phase, the equipment will be taken to Andrews and Somerset and Berks. This exercise will restore the drainage capacity of these areas since these outfall channels are usually heavily silted.
Ongoing maintenance works is at present being undertaken by the Region as it prepares for the rainy period. Major drainage work is being undertaken at Supenaam by the NDIA and regional administration. Strict monitoring of all conservancies and main canals are also being undertaken in event of heavy rains.
