Alpha, Rosignol and Milerock chalk up Super League victories

DEFENDING champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United, Rosignol United and Milerock Football Club were all in the victory lane last Sunday when action in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) organised Super League competition continued across the country.

At the Blairmont ground in Berbice, Rosignol continued their dynamic performance at home when they defeated Bakewell Top XX two nil.

Delroy Fraser in the 19th min and Olvis Mitchell in the 63rd min scored for the victorious Rosignol United team, who remained in fifth position on 23 points, while Bakewell Topp XX slipped into ninth position on 12 points and are in danger of being eliminated from the tournament.

At the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Milerock surged into second position with their 1-0 win over Sunburst Camptown, which took them to 28 points and also made them the only team who can pass points leaders Alpha United, who recorded a 2-1 victory over the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) also at GFC.

Playing in the feature game of the night, national skipper Howard Lowe found the back of the net in the 30th minute to send his team who are also the defending champions into the lead which they maintained until half time.

After a see saw battle ensued in the early stages of the second half between two sides who were numbers one and two in the points standings before this showdown, Stephen Dolphin snatched the equalizer with a 74th minute strike for GDF.

With two minutes remaining on the clock and the game petering out to a draw, Shawn Bishop struck a left footed shot from approximately 30 yards out which left GDF’s custodian Delon Young flat footed as he was beaten all ends up to his left, even as he tried desperately to grasp the ball which eluded him and nestled itself at the back of the net.

The win propelled Alpha to 36 points and needing one more victory or two draws to retain their title, while GDF slipped into third position on 25 points with three matches remaining.

The competition continues on Saturday with three matches..

At the Bartica ground, Liquid Gold and Sunburst Camptown will clash from 20:00h, while across at the Enmore Community Centre ground, Buxton United and Milerock will collide from 16:00h with GDF and Bakewell Topp XX meeting at the GFC ground from 18:00h.

On Sunday, Rosignol United will be looking to maintain their form at home when they take on Victoria Kings in a matchup that is set to kick off at 16:00h.

Two female matches are also slated for Saturday with Georgetown and Linden clashing from 16:00h at the GFC ground while across at the Bartica ground, Bartica and East Coast will do battle from 18:00h.
