NEESHA Beharry, of 10 Meadow Bank, East Bank Demerara, yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry charged with breaking and entering and larceny. Beharry pleaded not guilty to the charge which said, between October 12 and 13 last, at Public Road, La Penitence, she broke into the storeroom owned by Colin Young and stole 20 cases of energy drink, 100 cases of soft drinks, and 20 cases of beer, all valued 278,000.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, told the court that police officers went to the defendant’s home and found two cases of beverage.
But her lawyer, Mr. Trenton Lake, said his client was initially informed by the officers that she would be charged for receiving stolen property but suddenly Beharry found herself charged with breaking and entering.
Lake also said that the officers told his client that the beverages they found at her home were different from the ones that were stolen.
The lawyer asked for his client be released on bail because she has a religious function to carry out on Saturday.
Beharry was released on $60,000 bail and the matter will be called again on October 28.
