I refer to Paul Ramlochan’s letter, “Mrs. Jagan will be remembered for her outstanding contribution,” in the October 19 edition of Guyana Chronicle.
In his letter, drawing attention to Janet Jagan’s 90th birth anniversary on October 20, Ramlochan says: “I am still waiting for the Government of Guyana to name something in her memory….” Indeed, all Guyana is indebted to Janet Jagan for her immeasurable and indelible contribution to its political, social and economic upliftment.
In my book, Mrs. Jagan is not only Guyana’s foremost female freedom fighter but also its charismatic and ceaseless campaigner for gender equality, poverty alleviation and a workers’ bill of rights.
As a former journalist I can attest to her longstanding dedication to the profession of journalism and her ardent advocacy of truthful and ethical reporting.
How much would it take for the government to sponsor a Janet Jagan Memorial Scholarship in Journalism Studies at the local or other university?
We need to progress from remembrance ceremonies and solemn speeches to real action.
I salute the memory of Janet Jagan on her 90th birth anniversary.
