Adelphi man jailed for cocaine, marijuana trafficking

GOBERDAN Jairam, 27,  of Adelphi, East Canje, was sentenced on Monday to a total of six years imprisonment for drug trafficking. Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo inflicted the custodial penalty on him, at New Amsterdam Court, after he pleaded guilty to two charges of being in possession of two narcotics for the purpose.
But the two three-year terms will run concurrently.
In addition, Jairam was fined $30,000 with the alternative of six more months imprisonment.
Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, said that on October 14 last, the unemployed prisoner was seen acting suspiciously as he carried a haversack in the vicinity of the Reliance Police Station in Berbice.
The Prosecutor said the suspect was stopped and a search of his belongings yielded a transparent plastic bag containing a cigarette pack in which cocaine, as well as leaves, seeds and stems of cannabis sativa (marijuana) were found.
Following his arrest, the cocaine weighed three grammes and the marijuana two grammes, the Court heard.
