The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport sympathises with the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) as it deplores the disgusting behaviour of the boxers who participated in the just-conlcuded Commonwealth Games in India. Boxers Clevon Rock (Lightweight), Devon Boatswain (Middleweight) and Dexter Jordan (Flyweight) all absconded from Team manager Steve Ninvalle and Coach Terrence Poole whilst in transit at the JFK International Airport in New York, New York, USA.
The Ministry is all the more perplexed at the selfish, unpatriotic behaviour of the three now-unworthy representatives, as they had all secured US Visas from visits to the US long before the recent Commonwealth Games.
Was it some last-minute decision influenced by some forces at the airport? This incident compounds the precedent of similar Commonwealth Games attendees from Guyana in the past, but is more unfortunate as these three boxers had travelled to and through the US before, with their still-valid visas.
The Ministry of Sport repeats its sympathy over the months-long efforts and orientation by the GABA Management Team which accompanied the abscondees to the Commonwealth Games.
Even as their selfish action has implications for our sportsmen and women who will need US visas in the future, the Ministry, never-the-less, urges Manager Steve Ninvalle to stay the course, in the interest of Amateur Boxing in the country.
