Accident at Vreed-en-Hoop…
– car drove over woman’s feet
A 41-year-old woman from Best Village, West Coast Demerara, is lucky that both her feet are not broken after she was hit down by a car on the Vreed-en-Hoop public road yesterday by an elderly driver.
Maureen Hitlall called ‘Sherry’ had both her legs ‘run over’ by the wheel of the car that hit her and her husband off a bicycle, but which failed to stop after that.
The woman was being ‘towed’ on a bicycle by her husband, Mukesh, when the incident occurred just outside the popular ‘Fat Boy’ store at the Vreed-en-Hoop stelling.
The woman was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital but was subsequently rushed, by Ambulance, to the Georgetown Public Hospital. The Chronicle understands that Sherry was treated at the Georgetown Hospital and later discharged. Luckily, her legs were not broken but, according to Mukesh, the muscle tissues in his wife’s legs were damaged and, as such, she would not be able to walk for a few days, and certainly not work for probably another few weeks.
Explaining how the incident occurred, Mukesh said he was towing his wife on a bicycle along the Vreed-en-Hoop public road. He said as they passed a car that was parked outside the ‘Fat Boy’ store, the driver suddenly “pull out unto the road”, hitting the bicycle. Mukesh said both himself and his wife fell off the bicycle and it would seem that the elderly ‘bespectacled’ driver panicked as the car proceeded to drive over the bicycle and the feet of the woman lying on the ground.
“I get a knock on my foot, but the man run over she two foot,” Mukesh told the Chronicle.
“Is an old man was driving and he panicked after hitting us…,” Mukesh told this newspaper at the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday.
The driver of the car was detained for a while at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station.
Meanwhile, an eyewitness told the Chronicle that the driver may have panicked when he hit the bicycle the first time and that resulted in him causing further injuries to Sherry.
