World Food Day 2010 –“United against Hunger”

(FAO, Georgetown) ON October 16th of every year, countries around the world observe World Food Day. This year, World Food Day enters its 30th year since it was first observed in 1980. The theme of this year’s observance is “United against Hunger”.

As countries around the world observe World Food Day, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) joins with others to reaffirm our commitment to work to combat one of today’s most critical global issues –global hunger.

This year World Food Day will be observed nationally with the commissioning of a drip irrigation system at St. Cuthbert Mission on Saturday October 16, 2010. There will also be a display of exhibits by the St. Cuthbert Mission Farmers Group, the Ministry of Forestry and the various agencies of the Ministry of Agriculture. The day’s celebration will be spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the FAO. The commissioning ceremony will be attended by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Robert Persaud, the Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Ms. Pauline Sukhai, the FAO Representative of Guyana, Dr. Lystra Fletcher-Paul, as well as captain and residents of St. Cuthbert Mission.
