Saint Cuthbert’s Mission Drip Irrigation System to be commissioned tomorrow

– on occasion of World Food Day
THE Ministry of Agriculture, along with farmers and other stakeholders will observe World Food Day 2010 under the theme United Against Hunger on October 16 (tomorrow) at 10:00 hrs with the commissioning of the Saint Cuthbert’s Mission Drip
Irrigation System.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations’ theme for World Food Day 2010 is chosen to recognize the efforts made in the fight against world hunger at national, regional and international levels.

Uniting against hunger becomes real when the government, civil society organizations, international organizations and the private sector work in partnership at all levels to defeat hunger, extreme poverty and malnutrition.

In this regard, the Ministry of Agriculture has worked hand in hand with the FAO and IICA in its attempt to tackle some of the most pressing issues affecting food security.

The drip irrigation initiative is yet another attempt at
mitigating against the sometimes disastrous effects of climate change on food production. We believe that “rain or shine” food security must at all times be met, at least, at the level of availability.

The recent recognition of Guyana’s progress to attain food security within the context of the Millennium Development Goals by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is tantamount to the successes attained with the launch of the Ministry’s Grow More Food Campaign and the hard work of farmers.

The Ministry of Agriculture would like to salute farmers and
other stakeholders within the agriculture sector.

October which is designated Agriculture Month 2010 is celebrated under the theme “Fighting Global Hunger through Agricultural Diversification in Guyana”.
