Guyana Ruggers suffer heavy losses in India

FIVE- times Caribbean Sevens Rugby Champions Guyana suffered three major losses competing at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India when the matches kicked off yesterday with the pool matches.

Grouped with defending champions New Zealand, Canada and Sevens rugby inventors Scotland, the Guyanese as a team were only for the second time in their impressive Rugby tenure facing such opposition.

Playing against Scotland in their first match, the Guyanese according to news emanating out of India, played well and held the powerful Scotland side to just 26 points but failed to score.

New Zealand, known as one of the World’s best Rugby playing nation were the Guyanese’s next opposition.

It was the second time the two sides were facing each other, dating back to the Las Vegas Sevens in the IRB World Series, but New Zealand was in a no nonsense mood and crushed the Guyanese scoring eight tries in their 52-0 win.

Against Canada, a more improved performance was shown but they still lost 47-0.

The tournament now moves into its quarterfinals stage with New Zealand versus Wales, England facing Kenya, Samoa tackling Australia and South Africa squaring off against Scotland.

New Zealand have been enjoying a string of success at the Commonwealth Games, and is searching for their fourth successive title following gold medal runs in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur, Manchester England in 2002 and then Melbourne Australia in 2006.
