PRESIDENT of the East Bank Demerara Cricket Association (EBDCA) Rohan Sarjoo has expressed his disappointment with the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) and the way they have been handling the affairs of cricket. Speaking with Chronicle Sport, Sarjoo who is a former youth opener vented his frustration at chairman of selectors Robert ‘Pacer’ Adonis executing the duties of manager of the Demerara team that is presently contesting the Guyana Cricket Board/El Dorado Inter-county tournament.
“We have persons in the calibre of Orin Hutson from GNIC who can execute the duties of manger amicably well so I don’t see why they should appoint Mr. Adonis who was instrumental in selecting the team as chairman of selectors, manager of the team as well” said Sarjoo.
“Even if they don’t wish to appoint Hutson to the post, they can call on the services of Neil Barry who can not only execute the job of manager, but also demand the respect of all the players and to my mind, the using of Adonis and at times Raymond Barton as manager of the team is shortsighted by the DCB.”
He further questioned the DCB handing over an unsigned cheque to him for monies owed since last year, when he personally incurred expenses during a DCB ran tournament and was told he would be reimbursed soon, calling it a fraudulent act.
“How can someone pay a man a cheque without any signatures attached to it? That’s fraud or even tantamount to fraud and when I contacted the president, he told me he has to investigate the payment before any signatures can be attached to the cheque.
Added to that, I was told to walk with the cheque to the next DCB meeting which is scheduled to take place sometime next month. In other words, after waiting for over a year to be reimbursed, I have to wait longer to have a signature to the cheque that was given to me” stated Sarjoo.
When contacted for a comment, president of the DCB Bissoondyal Singh who is also a vice president of the GCB said the cheque was handed over to Sarjoo by the treasurer of the DCB Prittipaul Jaigobin in good faith, but certain verification needed to be done.
“The treasurer of the DCB handed over the cheque to Rohan in good faith. Even though that was done, I still have to verify certain things before signatures can be attached to the cheque” said Singh.
He added; “He (Rohan) was asked to walk with the cheque to the next DCB meeting where the verification process will take place, following which the signatures would be attached to the cheque, once everything is ok.”
According to Sarjoo, it’s the principle behind the paying of the cheque that has him worried and he is considering seeking legal redress with regards to same.
