CIOG raises $23.5M for Pakistan Relief Fund

CENTRAL Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) has raised $23.5M for the local Pakistan Relief Fund.
CIOG President, Mr. Fazeel Ferouz said the sum will be transferred, to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Pakistan, by the Georgetown Office.

He said the money will aid in providing nutrition, sanitation and clean water, primarily to the children in that country where six million of them have been affected by the recent floods there.
Ferouz said, although a date and time for the handing over has not been set, Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) yesterday closed the account which received the contributions.
However, Ferouz said people can continue to contribute with cheques to the CIOG and the National Communications Network (NCN).
“We hope that the handing over can be done in the presence of President Bharrat Jagdeo because he was very supportive and helpful with the project,” he said.
Ferouz expressed his gratitude to the various organisations that played a vital role in collecting funds for the purpose, especially the Ministers who were a part of the NCN telethon.
He announced that CIOG will also be working toward a Guyana Relief for Education Fund which will support that sector, as well a secure adequate financing for future disasters, to which various businesses and organisations have pledged their continued support.
