GKF holds successful senior championships

THE Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) was a buzz of activity last Sunday, when the Guyana Karate Federation (GKF) held its senior karate championship which was declared open by Minister of Sport Dr Frank Anthony.
The action got under way after Dr Anthony commended the GKF for its effort in making the tournament a reality while urging the federation to decentralise the sport and open more dojos for interested persons who are desirous of training and learning the sport.
According to a press release, Samuel King, Patrick Cheeks and Eric Hing took the top three positions in the adult male individual kata, while Roger Peroune, Delon Thorne and Manzoor Ali were the top three in the adult male individual kumite (below 75kg) with Keith Beaton, Cheeks and Kyle Isaacs occupying the top three in the over 75kg.
The release also indicated that the Guyana Karate College (GKC) team of Hing, Peroune and Guy Low took the adult male team kata event from the Guyana Japan Karate Association (GJKA) YMCA dojo team of Isaacs, Cheeks and Samuel Ming.
The GJKA team avenged their loss by winning the adult team kumite event where they accumulated 23 points, edging out the GKC and the Guyana Wado Karate Association in that order.
The judges for the day’s event were Amir Khouri (chief judge), Winston Dunbar, Christopher Mortley and Nandrandralall.
