Digicel presents local cycling champion with track bike

TELECOMMUNICATIONS giant Digicel (Guyana) Inc. yesterday partnered with 21-year-old national cycling champion Alonso Greaves when its manager presented him with a 2010 Fuji FC770 track bike at the Barrack Street, Kingston office, which the cyclist will be using at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in India.
According to Public Relations and Sponsorship manager of Digicel (Guyana) Inc. Shonette Moore, the Irish-based company which lives by its slogan ‘Bigger Better Network’ has been following the successes of Greaves over the past year and had no hesitation in supporting him when the approach was made.
“Certainly, his achievements in the cycling arena both on the local and international stage cannot go unnoticed by us and when he approached us for help with regard to obtaining this track bike, we had no hesitation in doing so and as he goes to India to compete in the Commonwealth Games, we wish him all the best.”
The Roraima Bikers Club (RBC) cyclist who along with Geron and Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams (no relation) will be representing Guyana at the Games, leaves these shores tomorrow, one day before his 22nd birthday and vows to do his best at all times.
“First of all, let me express special thanks to Digicel, especially Ms Moore and Jacqueline James (Head of Marketing) for responding to my cry for help at such an opportune time and I wish to say that this gesture will serve as one of the many motivations for me in India.
“I can only go out there and perform to the best of my ability, but one of the things I will have at the back of my mind, would be my performance in the recently held Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Puerto Rico, where I placed 10th out of a field of 90 cyclists.”
According to Greaves, who will be riding in his first Commonwealth Games, the field back in the CAC Games was packed with a lot of cycling stars and for him to gain such a creditable position was a great achievement and the perfect icing would be to top that position.
“I know I can better that performance and I have been training towards achieving that goal. With this timely contribution from Digicel, I am now one step away from achieving my goal and at the same time, making all of Guyana proud of me and for that, I wish to say thanks from the depths of my heart to Digicel,” said Greaves.
He will be competing in the Scratch and Points Race, along with the road race which is his specialty.
