Son chooses imprisonment for threatening to kill mother

THE 38-year-old son of a woman opted to serve 21 days in jail rather than pay a fine for threatening to kill her.
Harrinarine Lucknauth nicknamed ‘Dirty Harry’ (no address given) exercised the option at Albion Court in Corentyne, Berbice, on Wednesday last when Magistrate Tejnarine Ramroop gave him the alternative to being fined $10,000.

Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, said the unemployed convict threatened to end his mother’s life because she refused to give him money to purchase a prohibited narcotic.
Sixty-eight-year-old Doris Motee related, in Court, that her son continues to live with her and she is forced to supply his needs.
The pensioner said, if she fails to comply with her youngest child’s demands, he would beat her and threaten to destroy their home by fire.
The Prosecutor said, last August 22, Lucknauth awakened his mother at 05:00 h to ask her for some cash to buy the drug and, after his request was denied, he armed himself with a piece of wood and caused her to flee from the house and seek refuge at her neighbour’s house.
The Court was told that the neighbour, Devi, ran to the elderly woman’s rescue and prevented her son from entering the next yard.
However, later that day, Lucknauth returned home and renewed his demand for money while issuing the threat to kill and his mother became afraid and yielded to his request but reported the incident to the Police.
Magistrate Ramroop, admonishing the prisoner, reminded him of a son’s duty to honour his mother and father, in order to have long life.
