THE five sugar workers, who were gunned down by colonial Police on Essequibo Coast 138 years ago, will be remembered at a commemorative service at Cabbage Dam, Monument Square, on September 29.
A release from the Regional Administration of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), said the function will focus on the history of the protest and the innocent slaying of the martyrs.
The Devonshire Castle programme will start at 09:00 h, with attendance by Government officials and other residents, including schoolchildren.
Members of Devonshire Castle Mandir and Voice of Faith Miracle Ministries are also expected to attend and sing bhajans and hymns and wreaths will be laid at the foot of the monument by Regional Chairman, Mr. Alli Baksh and Mayor of Anna Regina, Mr. Sammy Rampersaud, among others.
The protest by the sugar workers and their killing was the first martyrdom in this country involving East Indian immigrants from India who were working on sugar estates as indentured labourers.
Hundreds of them were protesting, at Cabbage Dam, against poor living conditions and wages when the five were shot dead by Police on September 29, 1872.
