…truck dragged her for several feet before stopping
TWENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD Deokie Pooran of Lusignan Pasture was killed in an accident yesterday morning at Lusignan Railway Embankment and Golf Road, East Coast Demerara, while on her way to work.
According to the mother of the deceased, Carmen Rajdai Itwaru, the girl was standing on the parapet on the road side when she was struck down and dragged by a speeding truck after it overtook a motor car and hit a woman and her child.
The woman has since been identified as Malinia Zameer, who sustained head injuries and is hospitalized, while her four-year-old son, Kishan, was treated and sent away.
The mother and child were also standing on the Railway Embankment when they were hit by the truck.
The truck struck down Deokie Pooran and dragged her body several feet before it came to a stop.
She was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Her mother said she heard of the accident through a phone call from Budget Supermarket where her daughter has been employed as a cashier for the past three years.
The grieving woman added that when she showed up at the hospital she saw her daughter’s lifeless body.
Deokie was the sole breadwinner in the family. Her mother is a housewife, her father is ailing and a younger sister is still at school.
The family was yesterday assisted by several relatives and neighbours who gathered at their home to construct a tent for the wake and funeral.
The management of Budget Supermarket yesterday told the Guyana Chronicle that they are quite saddened by the incident and has since pledged their full support to the family of their dead employee.
They described her as a humble and good worker.
Meanwhile, Police Traffic Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown said yesterday that 74 persons were killed in 76 road accidents for this year, while in 2009, 67 persons lost their lives in 78 road accidents.
