Yusuf Abraham tops Rupununi at CSEC

With the aspiration of becoming an architect looming one step closer, 17-year-old Yusuf Abraham is basking in the aftermath of his success, having emerged as the top performer for the Rupununi Region at this year’s CSEC examinations. Overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds, Yusuf attained 7 grade ones with four distinctions and one grade two, achieving passes in Mathematics, English Language, Technical Drawing , Food and Nutrition , Human and Social Biology, Agriculture Science and Integrated Science.
The challenges that ensued as result of growing up in a hinterland community did not deter this high achiever from striving for success.
Abraham, who resides at St.Ignatius, Lethem, disclosed that he encountered difficulty preparing for the exam, being faced with the lack of resources, technology and, in some instances, teachers.
Despite this, however, the teenager remained focused on being among the top performers of Region Nine (Upper Takatu/Upper Essequibo)
He related that his success was not achieved through mere wishing alone, but through many hours of studying – from 01:00hrs – 04:00 hrs every morning.
In spite of this regimen, the grounded young man disclosed that he still found time to have fun, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family, which are the things that bring him joy.
Alluding to his success, Abraham expressed surprise at having done so well, since his Common Entrance results were disappointing for him.
He revealed that upon entering high school he worked diligently to remain an A student throughout his stint there.
Referring to the next phase in his life, young Yusuf Abraham indicated that he would like to pursue higher education at the University of Guyana, but is reluctant to do so since he is fazed by the high crime level in the city.
In light of this he mentioned his preference to remain in Lethem where it is “peaceful” and where he would not have to grapple with adjustment issues.
Imparting words of encouragement and advice to those who are now embarking on their journey towards the CSEC examinations, Abraham stressed the importance of staying focused and committed and the need for certain sacrifices in order to be successful.
Even with the examinations behind him Yusuf Abraham is seeking to ensure that students in his wake will be spared some of the hardships he fought to endure.
He has implored the administration to ensure that more text books, teachers, equipment and Internet access are available to students.
