THE Culture Ministry and the Guyana Culture Association, a Guyanese group based in the United States, yesterday recognised the Buxton Fusion School of Music and Tennicia DeFreitas for their musical contributions to Guyanese culture. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony indicated that the organisation’s contribution towards promoting culture is significant since it exposes people to things Guyanese, particularly those who were brought up in the Guyanese culture.
It is even more important particularly for those individuals who were born in the Diaspora.
He added that the Ministry will be strengthening its partnership with the organisation. This will see the Ministry serving as an agent whereby it will be informing the public about the organisation’s activities, issuing forms for participation in events and will work along with the group in the promotion of other aspects of culture.
Minister Anthony posited that through the cultural association, talents can be harnessed since there are a lot of Guyanese who have excelled in the various arts.
In this regard, he pointed out that these individuals can return to Guyana to function as resource persons for the development of specific areas of culture.
He also made mention of the Caribbean Publishing House which presents the opportunity for Guyanese and Caribbean writers to have their pieces published. It is hoped that by the end of the year, 12 books will be published.
Minister Anthony commended the organisation for its efforts and indicated the Ministry’s hopes of a strengthened partnership, in the promotion of culture and recognition of excelling Guyanese artistes.
Member of the Guyana Culture Association, Edgar Henry indicated that the organisation is seeking more support from Guyanese and corporate sponsors. He added that this year’s motto in “Diversity in our villages, harmony in our culture”.
Under this theme several activities were held including an award ceremony which recognised individuals, organisations and businesses in Guyana and the Diaspora, which demonstrates the emphasis of the theme.
The Culture Ministry has been hosting sessions aimed at bringing out the creative abilities of youths in the arts; this will ensure that Guyanese culture and traditions are sustained.
