HEAD of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon has announced that, in the view of Cabinet, the last week Monday visit, by President Desi Bouterse of Suriname, was a success.
The newly elected Surinamese Head of State visited Guyana at the invitation of President Bharrat Jagdeo and the two held talks on a number of issues and agreed on a framework of cooperation to replace the slow moving Joint Commission process that had been instituted some years ago.
“Both leaders concluded that greater executive involvement in bilateral engagements between Guyana and Suriname is a must,” Luncheon said Friday, at his post-Cabinet media briefing, at Office of the President, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown.
“For Cabinet, that was the defining outcome,” the HPS said.
Luncheon said a specific mechanism, identifying offices and officials, was discussed and agreed to during the bilateral between the two Presidents.
He said: “The first order of the day, subsequent to the visit would be to operationalise this defining engagement.”
The engagement, through the mechanism that will be under the direct supervision of both presidents on either side, would look at the possibility of bridging the Corentyne River and fast tracking of a number of other initiatives in what was described as a new wave of cooperation between the two countries, Luncheon reported.
