RELATIVES of 21-year-old Sheema Mangar, victim of a callous hit and run and robbery on Friday, are calling for authorities to step up efforts and deliver to the family who needs closure in the senseless killing of their loved one.
When the Guyana Chronicle visited her home yesterday, at 675 Mon Repos on the East Coast of Demerara, her mother, Radica Thakoor, said the police visited her home around noon yesterday and took statements.
“They were here and they asked questions and they said they had to take statements for the investigation,” she said.
The distraught woman noted that while the police are investigating, she feels there is more that the authorities could do.
“It is ridiculous the way she loss she life…she didn’t deserve that… I remember the last time I talk to her was Friday because I normally call her and she said she was on her way home,” Thakoor said.
She pointed out that there are too many cases that are left unsolved and too many families waiting for justice.
“Somebody had to see something. There were a lot of people on the road, so somebody has to know something…if the police search hard enough they have to find something,” the weeping mother said.
Meanwhile, reports from the Brickdam Police Station are that investigations are ongoing and no other information was available up to press time.
Mangar, an employee of Demerara Bank Limited, was making her way home and was at North Road and Camp Street waiting for a bus when her blackberry phone was snatched. The 21-year-old gave chase as the robber entered a waiting car.
Eyewitness reports are that she placed herself in front of the vehicle in an effort to stop the thief, but was run over and dragged several feet, from North Road to Church Street, under the car as it sped away.
Public spirited citizens rushed her to the Georgetown Public Hospital and later she was transferred to the St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital where she died on Saturday.
It is unclear whether or not Mangar knew her assailant.
However, her mother said she believes her daughter knew the person who caused her death, otherwise she would not have tried to stop him.
Thakoor said her daughter was a very pleasant and quiet person.
“She was working and studying accounts…she so young, and she didn’t even start living….she was happy and we gave her everything she needed,” the girl’s mother said.
She added that Mangar was her only daughter, the second of two children.
“Is only the other day we finish building our house for her and her brother and now she gone,” Thakoor said, with tears in her eyes.
A post mortem on the body is expected to be performed today.
