Increase in disorderly murders relate to social issues

– Police Commissioner
POLICE have reported an increase in disorderly murders, especially in the interior.
Commissioner Henry Greene, who made the report at a press conference last week, said steps are being taken to reduce the incidence but it was recognised that some relate to social issues.
He said such unlawful killings stem from social encounters in which men might be drinking, get intoxicated, start to argue and fight and then kill.
Greene said, in many instances, persons working in interior locations would take alcoholic beverages from a shop and, when it is time to pay, there is usually a problem.
According to him, some cases have engaged the attention of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security and even GPF ranks are taking anger management courses.
Greene said a teacher is, currently, conducting such classes.
He urged that, even if policemen are provoked by members of the public, they must learn to restrain their anger and portray a professional attitude despite the provocation.
Greene said records, for the period January 1, 2009 to September 6, 2010, show that, in ‘A to G’ Police Divisions, there have been 77 murders last year and 97 this year, indicating an increase of 26 per cent.
