DURING the past few weeks blackouts have become increasingly frequent and sporadic without any official explanations from GPL and this is an indication of the disdain and disrespect the company has for its customers. This is most surprising because a top GPL official said when the new Kingston power plant comes into operation blackouts will be a thing of the past. Well the Kingston plant is in operation but apparently the blackouts have increased. On the other, the GPL must be given an A grade for its efficiency to promptly disconnect customers who have outstanding payments. In fact, they are so efficient that on many occasions they disconnect persons who do not owe the company. Talk about efficiency. That is efficiency.
If the GPL’s efficiency in providing a reliable supply of electricity could have matched their efficiency in disconnecting customers then we would not have had a single blackout in this country and perhaps the company would have been ranked the most efficient in the world.
GPL has a monopoly on power supply so there is no alternative. However, big businesses and the wealthy could afford their own generators, but the poor and the working class cannot and therefore they simply have to endure the inconvenience.
Blackouts on West Demerara have become almost unbearable
