– Police suspect killings drug-related
POLICE Commissioner Henry Greene said Tuesday that, following the September 4 execution-style killing of five persons, including a woman and her baby, ballistics tests, so far, have not matched any of the guns used to any other crimes.
He told a press conference that suggests that new firearms were at the scene.
Greene said, in previous killings with AK-47 rifles, the Police had found matching spent shells but none up to now match those particular ones and warheads recovered since the last weekend massacre at Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara.
He disclosed that the Police retrieved 22 empty casings of 7.62 x 39 ammunition, six 9mm empty castings, five 9mm warheads and one 7.62 x 39 warhead.
According to him, a 9mm weapon was used and the 7.62 x 39 casings and warhead indicated it was fired from an AK-47 or M 70 weapon.
Greene also hinted that the murders may have been drug-related.
He said: “We did not catch him on the spot but we are working behind the scenes to see what we can fix up in relation to this matter. We are hearing so many things about a drug deal gone sour.”
Greene said the last information they had is that one of the three male victims collected nine kilogrammes of cocaine to be handed over to a certain drug gang out of Venezuela but only delivered two kilogrammes and claimed that the rest was seized by the Police.
He said that story was not believed and they have word that the response might have been local or sourced from Venezuela that caused the attack and slaughter.
His account of what happened said, about 19:35 h on September 4, Police received a report of shooting at Second Street, South East Cummings Lodge and they responded.
BULLET HOLES
They found a motor car, PLL 2297, owned by a woman named Jupiter, with several bullet holes and the bodies of Christopher Gordon alias ‘Bigga’, Sherwin Jerome alias ‘Dice Head’, Fiona Singh, Christopher Jupiter and Steve Jupiter called ‘Steve Man’ in it.
Greene said the owner of the vehicle is Steve Jupiter’s mother and Fiona Singh was the mother of his three-year-old boy child.
The Commissioner said it was reported that three men went and picked up Fiona Singh and her son from the home of her friend who lives in the same street and, as they were leaving, persons opened fire on them and escaped in another car which was described as white in colour.
Greene said the men died on the spot, while Fiona Singh and her son were taken to Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where the child was pronounced dead on arrival and the mother succumbed while receiving treatment.
UNGODLY ACT
“We could only surmise that the child and the mother could have been in the wrong place at the wrong time but these men were following the vehicle with the intention of committing this ‘ungodly act’ and they seized the opportunity to do it at a point which was convenient, since no one was around, the streets were dark and they chose to do it at that spot, where they felt they could have been successful and, so far, they have been,” he said.
Greene said the post mortem examinations on the bodies of Christopher Jupiter and Fiona Singh revealed that they died from shock due to gunshot injuries.
In keeping with the theory that the crimes may have been drug related, he said Christopher Gordon was deported to Guyana from the United States (U.S.) in 2003 for narcotics offences and Steve Jupiter is known to be involved in all sorts of criminal activities.
Greene said the name of the latter has been heard in all sorts of criminal activities, including being paid to “write off” other people, transporting drugs, protecting and “strong arming” for drug dealers and some more which Police intelligence revealed.
