OMAR Shariff maintained his lead in the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF)-organised, Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) Topco Juices-sponsored chess tournament when play resumed last Wednesday at the Keishar’s Sports Club.
Shariff took advantage of two blunders by Dennis Dillon in their fourth round clash, with Dillon first blundering his bishop and a few moves later his queen to hand Shariff the game.
Learie Webster rebounded from three losses in the first round which was played last weekend, to defeat Shiv Nandalall in a thrilling encounter.
Webster started his attack from his opening moves and along with some beautiful combinations he managed to secure the win at the endgame.
In the other two games, Taffin Khan defeated Glenford Corlette, while David Khan got past Alex Joseph.
The points standing after four rounds reads; Omar Shariff (4 points), Taffin Khan, David Khan and Shiv Nandalall on three each, Glenford Corlette and Errol Tiwari on two and Learie Webster, Dennis Dillon and Alex Joseph on one point each.
The tournament, which is being sponsored exclusively by DDL under their Topco Juice brand, continues next Tuesday from 17:45 h at the same venue.
