Trial today for Thursday airport cocaine bust defendant

STEVEN Dixon, 30, of Lot 125 Ocean Park, Brooklyn, New York and Lot 7 Garnett Street, Albouystown, was yesterday remanded to prison on a drug trafficking charge.
Before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, he pleaded not guilty to the allegation that, on September 2, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, he trafficked in five kilogrammes 870 grammes of cocaine.

His lawyer, Mr. Vic Puran applied for reasonable bail and said the facts of the case will quickly prove the defendant’s innocence.
Defence Counsel also requested that the video tapes at the airport be preserved so they can be use in the trial to show that the suitcase in which the substance was found does not belong to Dixon.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, successfully objected to grant of pre-trial freedom for Dixon and requested an early trial date.
The case was transferred to Providence Court, also on East Bank Demerara, for today.
