GWI marketing venture aims to ensure equal access

– Minister Ali
MINISTER of Housing and Water, Mr. Irfan Ali announced, last Saturday, that Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) will be introducing branded bottled water on the market.
He said the purpose of the venture is not to compete with any business but to bring reality and ensure that persons desirous of purchasing the commodity has equal access to it.

Ali said, with the introduction, the price will cause demands on the market and that is the objective.
“We do not want to compete with or push anyone out of business. However, we want to ensure that there is a balance on the market,” he explained.
Ali said if other water producers can reduce their prices to that of GWI, then every seller can benefit from an equal market share; but if their prices cannot be reduced, citizens will go for the brand that is affordable.
He said the GWI project is a part of its strategic vision, because the utility has to provide this social good at a very subsidised rate; it also has to ensure the development of profit centres within.
“This, I think, is an excellent opportunity for us to generate much needed revenue so that we can accelerate our capital programme,” Minister Ali said.
