Tyson gets second chance at London
WHEN they first met on the sixth edition of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) in collaboration with the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) ProAm card two months ago, Pauline London got the better of Debbie Tyson in their heavyweight encounter.
The matchmakers of the GBBC have selected their pugilists for the eighth edition of the ProAm Friday Night Fights to be held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and on September 24, with Tyson being given a chance to redeem herself against London.
These two, along with national middleweight champion Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman, Clive Atwell, Mark Austin, Gavin Williams and Simeon Hardy will affix their ‘John Hancock’s’ to their respective contracts in the GBBC boardroom this afternoon.
Williams will be matching gloves with Hardy in a junior middleweight encounter, while Austin, who has had an impressive start to his professional career where he has climbed to 3-0, will be going up against Atwell in a match that was scheduled to be his first pro bout.
Eastman has not seen the squared circle for nearly a year, but as the saying goes ‘Older the violin, sweeter the tune’, he has always been a crowd-pleaser whenever he enters the ring despite the long layoff. How well Jones handles him is left to be seen.
But certainly, the fight that would draw many away from the comfort of their living rooms and their television sets to the venue is the Tyson/London rematch.
When they met, London lived up to her post-fight talks by pummelling Tyson on her way to an unanimous decision victory and celebrated same by displaying a few modelling moves for the appreciative crowd on hand.
This rematch is one that the matchmakers of the GBBC should be proud of as it was called for by the fans following the first showdown which was a heated and intense affair.
Today’s contract-signing ceremony inks off at 13:00 h.
