‘Cobra’ slapped with murder, armed robbery charges

RECENTLY surrendered fugitive Tyrone Rowe alias ‘Cobra’ has been slapped with charges of murder, robbery under arms and damage to property.
The 17-year-old, of Lot 268 Independence Boulevard, Georgetown, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday and was remanded to prison.

It is alleged that, on August 5, at Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, he murdered Troy Collymore.
Other indictable charges said, last May 16, being armed with a gun, he robbed Mark Hunt of a gold chain and band valued a total $160,000 and, last March 1, being similarly armed, he robbed Troy Collins of a quantity of gold and diamond jewellery valued $1.4M.
Rowe pleaded not guilty to the damage to property charge, which said, on September 4, at Brickdam Police Station, he unlawfully and maliciously damaged a one way mirror worth $1.4M, property of the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
Standing in the docks, the prisoner, in tears, told the Court he is not aware of any murder and that the Police threatened to pin the charge on him.
Rowe denied damaging the mirror and claimed Police slammed his head into it causing it to break.
He said, after he refused to go on the identification parade, Police beat him about his body.
Rowe said he was subjected to electric shock because the Police did not want marks of violence to be seen on his skin but he was badly beaten.
When he said his family does not have money to retain a lawyer, the magistrate suggested he use the legal aid services.
The murder case was transferred to Sparendaam Court, also on East Coast Demerara, for October 8 and the other cases were sent to two other city Courts.
