Brush cutter severs weeder’s foot at Turkeyen

THE right foot of a 23-year-old man was early yesterday morning cut ‘clean off’ by a brush cutter as he was doing a weeding job at the University of Guyana’s Turkeyen campus.
David Williams, of 577 “B6” , South Sophia, is now warded at the  Georgetown Public Hospital where late yesterday he was complaining of excruciating pains.
Williams said that the accident happened around 6:00hrs on an open grass field aback of the University of Guyana.

Williams recalled that around 5:50 hrs, he, along with three other men, employed by contractor Eon Fraser, arrived at the work site with the intention of making an early start, so as to complete weeding the area before the midday sun was upon them.
He had been weeding for just about ten minutes when his machine hit a stump, the head broke off and bounced on to his foot, cutting through the protective long boots he was wearing, and severing his foot just above the ankle.
Fraser was summoned and he rushed the wounded weeder to the hospital.

He said he reported the incident to the administration of the University of Guyana, who empathized and immediately got about offering support for the wounded man.
The contractor also expressed gratitude to a police traffic rank on motor cycle who came along around the same time, and escorted them to hospital, through the busy traffic and occasional road blocks in the city yesterday.
Williams,  who is also a mason by profession, said he has working with Fraser’s workforce for about the last two to three years (when not doing masonry) and had a developed a good working relationship with the team.  Over the period he had done weeding jobs regularly for the University of Guyana.
The injured man is the son of Ms.  Joycelyn Williams, also of South Sophia, and the third of seven siblings.
