RECENT developments at the University of Guyana’s (UG) Faculty of Technology appear to beg the question: Is there chaos at the Faculty of Technology? The past immediate Dean of the Faculty of Technology, Professor Sherwood Lowe appears to be operating in a manner that openly violates the university’s policy. He is on sabbatical. There is a new Dean, Professor Verlyn Klass. Yet, Professor Lowe seems to be teaching currently at the university. This is a violation of the university’s policy pertaining to instructors on sabbatical.
I have been receiving growing complaints during this past week that there are not sufficient instructors to teach courses at the said Faculty. Students allege they have paid their tuition fees and are being advised to take classes in electrical and mechanical engineering because there is a shortage of instructors to teach geological and civil engineering. If so, this is an ill advised departure from the university’s stated curriculum.
Apparently, the best the university has done to address the shortage of instructors is to resurrect a retired University of the West Indies Professor, Lloyd S. Kunar. I knew his late father quite well when he was the Headmaster of the Ogle All-age Primary School. It warms my heart to know that a son of the soil has returned to serve the nation. Surely, this has to be a short-term measure because resurrecting retired professors cannot be the long-term solution for our premier institution of higher learning.
These developments, if true, are quite disturbing. Therefore, I am calling on the relevant authorities, such as the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor of the University, to look immediately into this matter. Our only University cannot afford to tolerate chaos in its Faculty of Technology or any of its other departments.
