MINISTER of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Manniram Prashad has handed over a brand new laptop to the first ever Miss Guyana Earth, Soyini Fraser. The ministry delivered on its promise at a presentation held at the minister’s office on South Road, Georgetown.
He said the pageant’s theme is in keeping with what his ministry is advocating and fits in with the issue of climate change and President Bharrat Jagdeo’s Low Carbon Development Strategy.
He said the environmentally conscious pageant serves to bring awareness to the young people as each delegates platform focuses on different areas.
Mr. Prashad said his ministry supports pageants with high standards such as the Miss Guyana Earth, which inaugural event was a success, and as such looks forward to supporting it next year.
Committee Member of the Miss Guyana Earth Pageant organizers, Simpli Royal, Ms. Gileon James, also took the opportunity to thank the minister for his support.
The 20-year-old, sponsored by UNICOM, was crowned Miss Guyana Earth in the first pageant of its kind for Guyana, hosted at Princess Hotel, Providence, East Bank Demerara on June 26, 2010. Her platform focused on ‘Reduction of Greenhouse Gases’. The queen also walked away with a number of other prizes including a scholarship.
Now in its tenth year, more than 90 delegates from various countries and territories will compete for the title of ‘Miss Earth 2010’, which will be held in Vinpearl Land, Nha Trang, Vietnam, on December 4, 2010.
‘Miss Earth 2009’, Larissa Ramos of Brazil, will crown her successor at the end of the event.
The ‘Miss Earth’ winner serves as the spokesperson for the ‘Miss Earth Foundation’, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and other environmental organizations.
