THE Caribbean Press, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport, will be conducting a creative writing workshop for school children at the Carifesta Sports Complex in Georgetown between 09:00 hrs and 15:00 hrs today. The Ministry, in a statement, said participating students were selected from various parts of the country including the Essequibo Coast, Bartica, Parika, West Demerara, East Bank Demerara, Berbice and Georgetown.
It said this workshop is the second part of extension activities of The Caribbean Press.
This second stage is a follow up to a poetry and short story competition conducted earlier in the year.
The third stage of the activities will be a ‘Festival of Words’ where the participants from both the competition and the workshop get a chance to perform their work alongside leading Guyanese and Caribbean writers. The Final stage is a grand publication of works from the competition.
The Caribbean Press was established in 2009 by the Government of Guyana to reprint out-of-print, and rare books on Guyana and to publish contemporary writings by Guyanese and Caribbean writers.
The idea of such a publishing house was first mooted during Carifesta X, which was successfully held here in 2008, in an effort to leave an enduring legacy of the festival proudly staged by this country.
The other major activity of the new publishing house is to encourage new writings by Guyanese children by four methods, namely literary competitions, workshops, performances and publications.
