GPF claim landslide victory over Caribbean counterparts

… Headquarters Division win local competition
THE Guyana Police Force (GPF) claimed another landslide victory over their Caribbean counterparts from Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados while the Headquarters Division won yet again in the local competition of what was the 56th edition of the Guyana Police Force Athletics Championships which concluded on Friday at the GPF Sports Club Ground at Eve Leary.
In the international aspect of the championships the local law enforcers amassed a total of 218 points which far outscored the 110½ points that their Trinidadian counterparts, who were their closest
challengers, were able to muster while the Barbados Police Force ended the competition on 61½ points.
The Headquarters Division also racked up an impressive total of 622 points in the inter-Force competition which left the A, B and C Divisions with an overwhelming deficit. The A Division was next in rank with 333 points, while the B and C Divisions managed 219 and 179 points respectively.
The heated contest came to an end on a high, as the sprints were decided during Friday’s final round of competition and Michael Saul did not disappoint his supporters as usual, as he managed to clock 10.3secs in the A class 100m event, a time which is the same as the long-standing 17-year-old record of Colin Boyce.
He was, however, unable to complete the sprint double as Winston George whom he managed to fend off in the 100m exacted his revenge in the 200m race.
The women’s aspect of the sprints was no different as the rivalry between Leota Bobb and Nadine Rodrigues, who are both seasoned campaigners, escalated as Rodrigues triumphed over her nemesis in this instance and claimed the 100m in 12.5secs against Bobb’s second-placed time of 13.0secs.
Rodrigues successfully repeated that performance in the 200m as she clocked 26.3secs and overcame the challenge from Akita Alves who finished second in 27.3secs.
