Inter-Guiana Club Football Championship Cup
GUYANA’S top football club Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United will be favoured to come away as victors this afternoon when they face the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) when second round action in the 2010 Inter-Guiana Club Football Championship Cup (IGCFCC) kicks off at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground.
In the opening match, Geldar de Kourou who went under to Alpha 1-3 will come up against Inter Moengotapoe a team which held the GDF to a two-all draw, after being down 0-2 at halftime.
Certainly, the Alpha/GDF clash which can be described as a local derby would be mouthwatering for local football lovers, especially if one takes into consideration the present form of both teams.
GDF can only blame themselves for the final outcome of their encounter with Inter Moengotapoe, as they displayed a laid-back, and to some extent, a don’t care attitude after their two first-half goals and should they display such this afternoon, then they will feel the full force of ‘The Hammer’ boys.
GDF’s Brazilian coach Edison Dos Santos will have to instil in his charges the ability to maintain their attacking composure for the entire 90 minutes of a match, especially against a team that is as sturdy as Alpha.
Goalkeeper Delon Younge had a decent game until the two goals and should be between the uprights again this afternoon, where he will be looking to thwart the efforts of Alpha’s Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams, Dwain Jacobs, Shawn Bishop and Dwight Peters.
Eusi Phillips, Marlon Benjamin, Warren Gilkes, Royan Morrison and Stellon David are worthy players in the GDF lineup, but with the Howard Lowe-led defence at the back for Alpha, along with Ronson Williams between the uprights, their work has definitely been cut out for them.
The winners of the tournament will receive US$1 500, possession of the lien trophy for one year, a permanent trophy replica and twenty-five gold medals, while the runners-up will receive a permanent trophy and twenty-five silver medals.
