$1.2M bail for causing death of 2 persons

ELTON George, who allegedly caused the death of two persons on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway last Saturday, was yesterday placed on $1.2M bail when he appeared in court charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
George, 37, of ‘N’ Bent Street, Wortmanville, was not required to plead to the charge. It is alleged that, on August 21 last, he drove motor vehicle PLL 9021 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Sigmond Marks and Christopher Benjamin.

The father of two was represented by Attorney-at-law Raphael Trotman; and Police Sergeant Shellon Daniels, prosecuting, asked that the defendant be released on substantial bail.
The matter was put down to September 1 when George is expected to appear at Christianburg Magistrate’s Court.
Trotman returned before Magistrate Octave-Hamilton yesterday afternoon to seek her guidance on his client’s well-being as his medical condition worsened.
The lawyer said the prison was not accepting George because of his medical condition and it was for this reason that he was making an application for a reduction in bail. If the court was not inclined to take this direction, Trotman asked that the magistrate consider sending his client to the hospital.
However, Magistrate Octave-Hamilton said the prisons would decide on George’s fate and that she was not inclined to call back the matter.
The accident, which claimed the lives of Marks and Benjamin, occurred at Kairuni on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway, at around 16:10 hrs, and involved a blue Scarlet Turbo motor car, PLL 9021, that was driven by George.
Travelling with George were Don `Country’ Walcott of 112  First Alley, Hill Foot, Wismar, who occupied the front  passenger seat; Keon Monah, 29, of Blueberry Hill, Wismar, who occupied the seat immediately behind him; and Marks, who was seated immediately behind Walcott.
Reports are that in the vicinity of Kairuni, George lost control of the vehicle as he attempted to negotiate a turn and, before careening off the road and ending up in a gorge, the vehicle reportedly turned turtle several times, hitting Benjamin who was passing by at the time.
