BRITAIN’S Andy Murray has been seeded fourth for next week’s US Open.
Murray, 23, is in good form after beating Roger Federer in the Toronto Masters final and reaching the quarter-finals in Cincinnati last week.
World number one Rafael Nadal is the top seed as he seeks to win the only Grand Slam to have eluded him so far.
Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki is the women’s number one seed after a foot injury forced world number one Serena Williams to pull out.
The 20-year-old Dane is the top seed at a Grand Slam for the first time and is in good form after winning three titles this year, including a victory earlier this week at the Montreal Cup.
Defending champion Kim Clijsters was named second seed, followed by two-time U.S. champion Venus Williams, Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic and Australian Samantha Stosur.
In the men’s draw, five-time champion Federer is the second seed ahead of Novak Djokovic, with Andy Roddick the highest-ranked American at nine.
Reigning champion Juan Martin del Potro, who beat Federer in the 2009 final, is unable to defend his title because of a wrist injury.
Four British women and two British men entered the qualifying tournament in search of a place in the main draw at Flushing Meadows.
Hopes are high for a first British male Grand Slam winner since Fred Perry’s U.S. triumph of 1936 after Murray’s impressive recent form, and Bjorn Borg is among those who believe the Scot can win a first major next month.
“For the men’s singles I’m going to pick either Andy Murray, Tomas Berdych or Robin Soderling,” the Swede told the ATP Champions Tour.
“Murray is definitely a player that can win Grand Slam tournaments.
“He’s going to be up there fighting with Nadal and Federer from now on and one day I think he might be the number one player in the world.” (BBC Sport)
