Lethem/Linden road opened to light traffic

The Lethem/Linden road has been opened to small and light vehicles although work is continuing on the damaged patch by Region 9 contractors and the Ministry of Public Works and Communications according to Minister of Public Works and Transport, Robson Benn who spent four days on the road, assisting local contractors to fix the road approximately about 64 kilometres (40 miles) out of Lethem at Meritizeiro. About 10 kilometres of road were fixed over a large portion of swampy lands. Small and light vehicles have begun to traverse the roadway today, but still closed to heavy duty vehicles, trucks and big buses.
Some truck drivers have spent over two weeks awaiting the opening of the road.
Meanwhile charter flights, apart from the regular Trans Guyana Airways, have been flying to the area to take passengers to and from Lethem.
A Skyvan had to shuttle one week fuel supply to the area for the Lethem Power Company.
Since the road was closed several trucks have been waiting at Annai to take supplies to Lethem. The adverse weather has been preventing the men from completing their work and had to resort to men using buckets and shovel to bail slush and rain water from the roadway.
Once there is good weather, the road will be ready for trucks in two days time.
