Baksh not pleased with low rates, taxes collection

In the Region Two
Chairman of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Alli Baksh, has lashed out the collection of rates and taxes by Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) in the region.

Speaking at the statutory meeting of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) for August, Mr. Baksh said the policy of the Government is to collect every dollar outstanding for rates and taxes.

According to the Chairman, officers of the five NDCs and the Anna Regina Town Council must do more on the ground to collect millions of dollars outstanding for rates and taxes.

The chairman also called for NDCs to get involved in economic ventures so as to become more sustainable. Mr. Baksh said NDCs must not just sit and wait on government’s subvention each year but must get up and get in order to become sustainable. He said NDCs officials have to become more aggressive in finding ways to generate more funds.

The collection of rates and taxes by NDCs is far below their projected target for the year.
