During a recent courtesy call on Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Dr. Steve Surujbally, Acting British High Commissioner Mr. Simon Bond was given a detailed account of recent major activities of the Commission as well as aspects of its undertakings associated with and leading up to General and Regional Elections to be held in 2011.
An Office of the Elections Commission press release on August 11 signed by GECOM Public Relations Officer Vishnu Persaud, said that the Chairman used the opportunity to update Mr. Bond about the new National Register of Registrants and the laying of the groundwork for the recommencement of Continuous Registration in September this year leading up to preparations for the conduct of General and Regional Elections next year.
According to the press release, Mr. Bond assured that his Government was cognizant of the commitment of the GECOM and its Secretariat in administering the 2006 General and Regional elections in a peaceful and efficient manner and of GECOM’s efforts aimed at ensuring that all future elections would be held in compliance with the highest principles governing the electoral process and associated with international best practices.
Mr. Bond assured Dr. Surujbally of the continued assistance to the people and Government of the United Kingdom in every possible way pertaining to the preparations for and administering of elections in Guyana.
