– Shotokhan Karate contenders, committee members meet President
Sod turning for the Guyana Karate College’s (GKC) $100M Dojo/training hall at Liliendaal is slated to take place today, according to Karate Chief Instructor Frank Woon-A-Tai who met President Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday at State House. Woon-A-Tai was accompanied by the technical committee and contenders of the 11th International Shotokhan Karate Federation (ISKF) tournament billed for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) today.
A few years ago President Jagdeo granted an acre of land to the GKC for the construction of the Dojo located adjacent to the Olympic-size swimming pool currently under construction.
In 2008, the GKC presented an architectural design for the Dojo which will be divided into four primary training areas, and will boast an administrative office and student dormitory. The aesthetics for the facility will also include a Japanese garden and fish pond.
Over 500 karatekas from various countries will be competing in the 11th ISKF Pan American Championship beginning held today and tomorrow.
The GKC is a non-profit association registered as a Specially Authorized Society No. 1075 under the Friendly Societies Act.
The College is accredited by the ISKF, a member of the Caribbean Karate College (CKC), and the Guyana National Sports Commission.
