THE Demerara Criminal Assizes which were closed recently due to the absence of two judges on leave, was re-opened yesterday with the return of Justice Roxanne George. The other judge, Justice William Ramlal, who went on leave seven days ago, is still away, leaving only one judge to preside over the sessions with a list of 135 criminal cases still to be heard.
When Justice George ascended the Bench yesterday morning, the prosecution, headed by Attorney-at-law Miss Rhondel Weever, in association with lawyer Miss Latchmie Rahamat, presented the case of Nigel Forrester for the murder of Mahadeo Boodkai.
The murder is alleged to have been committed on November 24, 2005.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Basil Williams entered appearance for the accused. A 12-member jury was subsequently empanelled to try the case with Justice George presiding.
Leading prosecutor, Miss Weever, will deliver her opening address to the jury this morning.
According to the Prosecution, 15 witnesses are expected to be called by the prosecution.
