THE Ministry of Public Works and Communications has reported rapid progress in installation of concrete culverts which will remove the breaches on the Linden /Lethem road at Hunt Oil and prevent new breaches by flood waters in the area.
A member of the Works Services Group at the Ministry disclosed that the culverts are pre-cast and have been taken to the affected areas and embedded.
He said that the Ministry had planned to use two culverts in the area prior to the rains but had this week decided to use several more given the severity of the situation.
Sections of the roadway have been washed away, causing perturbation to commuters, due to unusually heavy rainfall in recent weeks.
The spokesman disclosed that the problems arose because the water coming down from the mountains swelled to the extent that they overtopped the road and washed away some sections.
“The concrete culverts will allow the passage of these flood waters under the roadway, without causing damage and the overall situation will be greatly improved,” he said.
Heavy duty vehicles which have been banned from using the road until today, will be allowed to traverse as soon as all the culverts are in place.
A minibus driver disclosed that on Wednesday light vehicles were restricted from travelling between 06:00 hours and 18:00 hours but were allowed to traverse the road between 6 PM and 6 AM.
One driver reported a much improved situation of the road as against that which existed up to Monday afternoon last.
The work is being done by Contractor V. Dalip of the construction company of that same name and the source revealed that the Contractor has been working around the clock to remove this source perturbation among commuters on the Linden/Lethem Highway.
