Ottle’s century helps T&T trounce Leewards easily

DENNERY, St Lucia, (CMC) – Captain Yannic Ottley stroked an attractive, unbeaten century as Trinidad and Tobago trounced Leeward Islands by 64 runs to storm to the top of the standings in the rain-battered TCL Group West Indies Under-19 One-Day Trophy yesterday.
Strolling to the wicket with T&T in trouble at 85 for four, Ottley hammered 105 to fire T&T to 230 for four off their 50 overs at the Dennery Playing Field.

The Leewards then lost their first wicket without a run on the board before collapsing to 166 all out off 37.3 overs.

Leg-spinner Kissoondath Magram was the architect of the Leewards’ demise, snatching four for 46 while Ottley returned to take two for 19 with his left-arm spin.

It was Ottley who set up T&T’s victory, however, with a brilliant innings that saved T&T from a bad collapse.

The right-hander, who played for West Indies in the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand earlier this year, counted 12 fours in an innings that last 130 balls as he dominated the Leewards attack.

In the process, he shared in a crucial, unbroken 145-run stand for the fifth wicket with Akeal Hosein who hit one four in an unbeaten 43 from 72 balls.

They came together after fast bowler Adelvin Phillip (2-55) had removed openers Nicholas Alexis (7) and Kieron Joseph (2) cheaply to leave T&T stumbling on 21 for two.

Yannick Cariah continued his failures when he fell for 11 and Evin Lewis was also prised out for 17, as T&T struggled to find their footing.

The Leewards got off to a rocky start when fast bowler Teshawn Castro trapped opener Jamal Fernadez lbw without scoring without a run on the board but Shane Burton smashed 71 and Phillip his a captain’s knock of 50 to offer resistance.

Opener Burton cracked eight fours off 76 balls while Phillip, batting down the order, hit five fours and two sixes off 57 balls, but their efforts were not enough to get the Leewards over the line.

T&T lead the standings with nine points with two rounds remaining.
