THE East Bank Demerara Cricket Association {EBDCA} has resuscitated its annual summer cricket camp this year with the opening ceremony slated for the Guyana National Stadium, Providence and hopes to make this an annual event. This camp seeks to attract between 60 to 75 youths of both gender ranging in ages from 11 to 18 drawn from the East Bank Demerara area including Linden and Upper Demerara and will be conducted over an eight day period.
The camp will consist of theoretical sessions on various topics, practical coaching and cricket match sessions along audio-visual sessions.
The major objectives being to instill the basic cricketing skills required to be a professional cricketer, making these youngsters aware of the finer points of the game, including the rules and etiquette required for the proper conduct of the game, teaching them the importance of education, nutrition, fitness and the general values of good sportsmanship.
Through this Camp and other annual Camps in the future, the EBDCA hopes to build a database of young aspiring cricketers that they will groom to represent the Association at the Under 15, Under 17 and Under 19 levels and the program has been carefully designed to cater for both theoretical and practical aspects of the game and important life skills.
Several reputable resource personnel have agreed to lend their knowledge and expertise to the camp which will be declared open by the Director of Sport, Mr. Neil Kumar and will hear remarks from the President of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Mr. Chetram Singh and President of the EBDCA, Mr. Rohan Sarjoo.
These include the Secretary of the GCB Anand Sanasie, former Test player Roger Harper, GCB video analyst Robin Singh, GCB’s Cricket Development Officer (CDO) Reon King and former Chairman of the National Sports Council and financial consultant Conrad Plummer.
Director of the Financial Intelligence Unit and retired banker Paul Geer, National Scorer, Linden Wilson, Help and Shelter Officials and Counselors Margaret Kertzious, Karen Gomes and Kevin Massiah are also slated to address the participants of the camp.
On Saturday, August 7th 2010, two evenly matched teams will be selected to participate in a 40 Overs affair and it is intended to be a special day for those selected to have their first match at an international world class venue.
The Camp, which will be held in the PRESS CONFERENCE ROOM, is scheduled to commence at 09:00h each day and will see a 40 Overs match being played between two evenly match teams selected from the participants.
At the closing ceremony, participants of the camp will be presented with certificates, while the Honourable Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dr Frank Anthony is expected to deliver the feature address.
