Browne’s half-century helps Windwards beat Jamaica

GROS ISLET, St Lucia, (CMC) – Left handed opener Atticus Browne played a consummate, sheet anchor role to steer Windward Islands to a convincing seven-wicket win over Jamaica in their third round TCL Group West Indies Under-19 One-Day Trophy match here yesterday.. Browne finished undefeated on 79 as the Windwards, set 199 for victory, lost just three wickets in their chase as their reached their target off 40.4 overs.

Earlier, Jamaica were bowled out for 198 off 41.4 overs after they were sent in at the Gros Islet Playing Field.

Opening bowler Bronte Bess had the best figures of two for 22, his new ball partner Kurt Edward captured two for 23 while captain Audy Alexander bagged two for 27 and Levaughn Lewis, two for 28.

Chasing a tricky total, the three-day champions got off to a great start thanks to Browne who struck 13 fours in posting 102 for the first wicket with opening partner Denis Smith.

They dominated Jamaica’s bowlers before Smith, who hammered 48 with seven fours and one six, fell to a catch by Jermaine Blackwood at cover off the bowling of off-spinner Horane Linton.

Browne also found a useful partner in the experienced Kavem Hodge, putting on 45 for the second wicket before Hodge drove fast bowler Nicholson Gordon to Donovan Nelson at extra cover for 36 which comprised five fours.

Sunil Ambris then gave support to Browne in a 44-run, third wicket stand before he paddled a short ball to Mickel Francis at short fine leg off John Campbell for 10 with victory in sight at 191.

Blackwood had earlier led Jamaica’s scoring, hitting 63 with four fours and three sixes batting at number six, to jump start his side’s innings.

With Jamaica flailing wildly at 30 for four, Blackwood featured in two main partnerships to lead Jamaica’s recovery.

He first put on 53 for the fifth wicket with opener Campbell who contributed 49 that contained four fours and three sixes, and then posted another 78 for the sixth wicket with wicket-keeper batsman Kemar Marshall who smashed five fours and one six in a knock of 41.
