Bajan spinners undermine Guyana for seven-wicket win

MICOUD, St Lucia, (CMC) – Barbados’ spinners undermined Guyana to set up an uncomplicated seven-wicket win in their third round match in the TCL Group West Indies Under-19 One-Day Trophy yesterday. In an encounter reduced to 26 overs per side because of a damp outfield at the Beauchamp Playing Field, off-spinner Roston Chase (3-7) and left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican (3-18) took three wickets apiece to send Guyana tumbling to 116 all out off their allotted overs.

Left-arm spinner Dario Cummins chipped in with two for 25 as Anthony Adams top-scored with 28 and opener Brian Sattaur got 26.

In reply, Chase starred with the bat, stroking a fine, unbeaten 45 to steer Barbados safely to 119 for three off 22.2 overs.

He struck four fours and a six off 56 balls and held the innings together to ensure there were no hiccups for Barbados.

Captain Kraigg Brathwaite got the innings off to a healthy start, scoring 32 from 44 balls with three fours in a stand of 41 for the first wicket with Clint St Hill who got 15.

Fast bowler Quincy Richardson (2-26) then removed both openers, bowling St Hill in the eighth over before sending back Brathwaite to a catch at mid-wicket by Anthony Adams with the score on 61 in the 12th over.

Kyle Mayers (11) added 26 for the third wicket with Chase before holing out to long on off spinner Joemal LaFleur but Chase saw Barbados safely home.

Earlier, Guyana’s innings never got going after play started more than five hours late.

After being sent in, opener Richardson was run out in the day’s first over without scoring and Harrinarine Chattergoon edged left-arm seamer Ravendra Persaud to Chase at first slip to fall for 11 at 21 for two.

Sattaur hit a four and two sixes in his 26 before falling at 44 for three and wickets continued to fall steadily as Warrican undermined the top order.

Anthony Adams hammered three sixes in his 28 from 40 balls but when he perished at 83 for six bowled by Cummins, the Guyana innings limped to a tame end.
