Amertil takes 400m gold as Spencer wins high jump

MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico (CMC) – Bahamian Christine Amertil produced a season-best time to win the 400 metres at the Central American and Caribbean Games on Monday night. The 30-year-old clocked 52.16 seconds to get home ahead of Guyanese Aliann Pompey who posted 52.33 to be second while St Kitts and Nevis’ Tiandra Ponteen was third in 52.75.
Amertil, who won silver in the 4×100 metres relay at the World Championships in Berlin last year, had finished second behind Ponteen in her semi-final.
St Lucian Levern Spencer joined Amertil as gold medal winners when she captured the women’s high jump with a leap of 1.94 metres.
Spencer’s victory was an improvement on her 2006 CAC outing in Colombia when she took bronze in the event. Jamaican Sheree Francis finished second with a measurement of 1.91, with Mexico’s Maria Rifka taking bronze with a similar mark.
Trinidadian Cleopatra Borel-Brown, meanwhile, dominated the shot put as she measured 18.76 metres to win gold.
The Commonwealth Games and CAC bronze medallist beat Jamaican Zara Northover (17.04) into second with fellow Trinidadian Annie Alexander taking third place with a throw of 16.76.
