Health Ministry puts out ‘flu season’ advisory

DIRECTOR of Regional Health Services (RHS) in the portfolio Ministry, Dr. Narine Singh said, yesterday, that the increase in the incidence is because ‘flu season’ has begun. “It is not only in Georgetown but across the regions and moreso on the coast. The recent weather conditions have also contributed to this, as well,” he offered.
Singh told the Guyana Chronicle that, in most cases, the influenza lasts between two and three days and more people are visiting out-patient facilities with symptoms.
He said efforts have been made to ensure that all the clinics are well stocked with the relevant medical supplies to address the needs of the sick.
Singh advised those experiencing flu-like symptoms to:
* cover the nose and mouth with tissue when coughing or sneezing and throw  it into the trash;
* wash hands often, with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing;
* avoid touching the eyes, nose or mouth, as germs are easily spread that way;
* try to avoid close contact with sick people and
* stay at home, if sick, for seven days after the illness surfaces or until
you have become symptoms free for 24 hours (whichever is longer) to keep you
from infecting others and spreading the virus.
