Canadian High Commissioner briefed on GECOM activities

CANADIAN High Commissioner to Guyana, Mr. Francois Montour, last Thursday was briefed on recent major activities undertaken by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) and those in relation to general and regional elections to be held here in 2011.
The discussions took place during a courtesy call by High Commissioner Montour paid to Chairman of GECOM, Dr Steve Surujbally, a release stated.

The High Commissioner was accompanied by Ms. Carol A. Persaud, political/economic analyst attached to the Canadian High Commission and was updated on the new National Register of registrants; work completed in preparation for the conducting of Local Government Elections; and laying of groundwork for the re-commencement of continuous registration in September, as a major aspect of the build up to conduct General and Regional election in 2011.
Dr. Surujbally assured the Canadian High Commission that GECOM strives to carry out its mandate in keeping with international best practice.
Mr. Montour noted that the Canadian government has recognition and acknowledgment of GECOM and its Secretariat’s  commitments in administering the 2006 General and Regional elections in a peaceful and efficient manner, along with GECOM’s current work  in ensuring that all future election would adhere to the highest principles governing  the electoral process.
Mr. Montour assured Mr. Surujbally of the continued assistance of the people and Government of Canada, in every possible way pertaining to the preparations for and administering of elections in Guyana, the release added.
